Alexis's post on Business & Economic Development Session

April 25, 2012

The Economics day was very interesting.  I got to see a lot of businesses I didn't even know existed.  I also had no idea that Fremont had businesses that sent their products all over the world.  It was very enlightening that Fremont has places that do that.  I think the best part of the day was Alotta Brownies, their food is amazing and it seems like a very well respected business.

Ryan C's Post on Heath, Wellness & Quality of Life Day

My favorite YLA day so far was the Health, Wellness & Quality of Life Day.  I think this was my favorite because I want to be involved in a health care career one day.  I am leaning toward a degree in physical therapy so learning more about health care services was very important to me. We have excellent health and wellness facilities in Fremont.  FAMC and the Fremont Family YMCA are really great.  I enjoyed hearing Brett Richmond from FAMC talk about leadership in the health care field.  The tour of the FAMC rehab facility was also very interesting.  This is the type of place I might work in someday.

Ryan C's Post on Community & Social Services Day

On November 23, 2011 we toured some of the facilities in Fremont that provide community services.  We toured Salvation Army, Low Income Ministry, Care Corps, Habitat for Humanity, Lutheran Family Services, Jefferson House, Red Cross and Crisis Center.  We also learned about the Teammates mentoring program.  I really liked this day because all these services are so important to many people in Fremont.  It is important for communities to have these services available.  If we didn't have them the people in need would have no one to turn to for help.  By helping those less fortunate we will make our community stronger as a whole.

Ryan C's Post about State & Fed Government Day

On February 15, 2012 we were able to take a tour of the State Capitol Building in Lincoln.  If you have never seen it before it is a really cool building.  I really liked going up all the way to the top of the building.  I had been in the Capitol before but I never got to go all the way to the top of it.  It was interesting to hear some of our state senators talk and to hear how things work in the state government.  I think Governor Heineman is a good leader for our State.

Ryan C's First Blog Attempt

I have never blogged before so this will be a new experience for me.  But, I guess that is what Youth Leadership Academy has been teaching us...all about new experiences.  I would just like to say that I have enjoyed being a part of YLA and I feel like I have learned a lot about many different areas of my community.  I think it is important to take a closer look at some of the areas we sort of take for granted.  I have learned that a community doesn't function just by one or two people running it, it functions by MANY people doing their jobs and working together to make us a stronger community.  We have toured businesses, state and local government, health care facilities, community service opportunities and educational institutions.  All of these are what make our community what it is and they all work together for the common good.

Abby's Post About the Health, Wellness & Quality of Life Session

My blog about Health and Wellness day
I liked how we got to go upstairs in Hyvee I didn't know that there was a upstairs.
I had fun going on the scavenger hunt for are breakfast. It was a challenge for me because I don't go to Hyvee I go to Walmart.
I liked the dietitian that told us about the way that you could find healthy foods in Hyvee.
I liked how the boss had told all the jobs that he did when he worked for Hyvee.
When we went to the YMCA I didn't know that the ice rink was that hard to make the ice on the rink.
I was surprise that there Zamboni was a refinished Zamboni.
I didn't know that they did curling in the ice rink.
I was surprised when we went to the active adults class that all the people that was their was able to keep up.
I got a exercise trying to keep up with the adults.
I liked the speakers that talked to us during lunch.
I didn't like the physical therapy tour it was a little boring.
I liked the radiology tour I didn't know about all the machines.
I liked this day it was a very educational day for me about health and wellness.

Scott's Experience at the Health, Wellness & Quality of Life Day

I found the Health,Wellness and Quality of Life session to be very enriching.  The Hy-Vee presentation by Mike Christensen I greatly enjoyed.  I like how he gave a brief history on how he became as successful as he is today.  His comment on the US food supply being one of the healthiest in the world was interesting considering the negative facts so many people focus on.  I like how the YMCA and Sidner Ice Arena helps the community give everybody some sort of physical activity to do.  The dance class we participated in was at first a little awkward, but as it progressed I had a lot of fun.  I liked the tour of the Fremont Area Medical Center and the variety of jobs it employs.  The case study activity was very interesting to hear what other YLA members would do to resolve the problems.  One suggestion I would make is the NuVal Score scavenger hunt should be modified so that the minimum score to look for is feasible to find.  Overall I felt the session was productive and informative.

March 29, 2012

The health and wellness day was very interesting.  I did not know that Hy-Vee had a system that helped with dieting.  The tour of the hospital was also very intriguing.  I really liked the talk about responsibility as a leader when we filled out solutions for issues that we read.  It was a very enlightening day.

Scott's Experience at the Education Session

On October 26, 2011 was the Education session.  That day was probably one of my favorite sessions we've had.  I enjoyed touring Midland Campus and meeting some of the students and faculty.  The student panel was very interesting to hear their opinions on how to succeed in college.  Their experiences were similar to the ones I've had during high school and helped answer some of my questions.  Lunch from the cafeteria was delicious!  I also liked the presentation  by the Midland students about the different clubs and activities that are available to participate in.  I would definitely recommend this session for the YLA members next year.

Alexis's Post About City/County Government Session

December 28, 2011

Fremont seems to have a stable governmental system, despite the fact the city doesn't always have the proper funding that they need to better the community.
I had no idea that the water treatment plant goes through all these complex steps just to make sure its citizens have clean running water to drink and use.

Abby's Response to the State & Federal Government In Action Day

i liked that we got a tour of the capital building . i think that we should have a tour of the house and the capital building that would have been fun. i didn't care very much about the speaker that came and talked to us at lunch. i thought going up to the top of the building was fun to see the buildings from that high in the air. the speaker that talked about a bill becoming a law was alright it could be better. i liked the lady that gave us the tour she told me things that i didn't know about the capital and she was very enthusiastic.

Alexis's Post About the Community/Social Services Day

November 24, 2011

Yesterday we toured Care Core and the Salvation Army.  I learned that Fremont has a lot more people that are homeless/need assistance than I realized.  The thing that interested me the most was the Habitat for Humanity, I think it is really kind that people go through the trouble to build a house that someone in need really deserves.

Abby's Response to the History & Cultural Heritage Day

I liked how we learned about the opera house being rebuilt. I didn't know that Platte  street had a trolley to go back and forth. I liked how we looked at the houses that was built and still standing. i liked how we went to Nye square and ate lunch with the senor citizens and listened to a board of generations. that was fun. what i didn't like was when we had to listen to the speaker about identity theft. i thought that we should have listened to it latter in the day.
